Dr Lotte Latukefu – The opera singer
Lotte completed a Bachelor of Music degree at the Canberra School of Music in 1991. She received Fulbright, Ian Potter and Queen Elizabeth Trust scholarships to complete a Master of Music at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. While in New York, Lotte performed at the Lincoln Centre and sang at numerous contemporary and chamber music festivals including George Crumb’s third Book of Madrigals under the direction of the composer. Lotte regularly sings in concerts of contemporary Australian music and has recorded new works with leading Australian artists such as Ian Munro, Claire Edwardes and David Miller. Lotte has performed in electro-acoustic and micro-tonal music festivals in the USA and UK.
Lotte returned to Australia in 1996 and was appointed Lecturer in voice at the University of Wollongong. In 2010 she completed a Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Wollongong. Lotte has received national awards and citations for Outstanding contribution to teaching and learning including ALTC national citation for outstanding contribution to teaching and learning in 2011 and UOW Vice-chancellor’s award for outstanding contribution to teaching and learning in 2011. She has published internationally on a pioneering, research-led model of learning singing underpinned by socio-cultural theories and has presented her research findings at international and national conferences.
Lotte has performed with Opera Australia, South Australian Opera, Chambermade Opera, Opera North, ACT opera, Stopera and Sydney Metropolitan Opera, Western Australian Symphony Orchestra and Wollongong Symphony Orchestra. She has also performed with the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra. In 2004 Lotte covered the roles of Flosshilde and Waltraute in the premiere of South Australian Opera’s Ring Cycle by Wagner.
Associate Prof. David Vance – The pianist
David studied piano with Nan Price and with Greville Rothon, the assistant teacher to Claudio Arrau. He has a wide repertoire of solo and concerto work including music by Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, and Gershwin. David also has an interest in vocal accompaniment and chamber music, and his performances include recitals, recordings and ABC broadcasts with some of Australia’s leading instrumentalists and singers.
David is an experienced orchestral conductor, having worked with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, ABC Sinfonia, the Sydney Youth Orchestra, the SBS Youth Orchestra, and the BHP Youth Orchestra. For fifteen years, David was resident Musical Director for Wollongong’s professional theatre company, Theatre South for which he composed and directed music for over thirty productions. In recent years he has been responsible for the music soundtrack for several documentary films screened. David has a Bachelor of Arts (Honours), University of New South Wales, Bachelor of Music (Honours) University of Sydney and LMusA (piano).
